Qodash Eta - Hallowing of the Church

Picture
Fr. Dr. Khoshaba Gewargis
According to the Lectionary of the Church of the East "Qodash Eta" are the last four Sundyas of the Liturgical Year. Qodash Eta means hallowing of the church. If the first day of November is Sunday, that Sunday is the first Sunday of Qodash Eta. If the first day of November is Monday or Tuesday the Sunday before these days is considered the first of Qodash Eta. If the first of November is Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, the following Sunday is Qodash Eta. The readings in these Sundays is from the Old Testament and are about the temple and its construction and utisles. The New Testament readings are about our Lord Jesus Christ cleansing the temple.

In the West Syriac Church the Sunday following the first Sunday of Qodash Eta is called Hudath Eta, which means renewal of the church. In our church it is called the second Sunday of Qodash Eta. It is however observed as the Sunday of tithes or harvest festival.
